Clinical Nurse Specialist - NICU

SUMMARY: The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who functions in the role of expert clinician, educator, leader, consultant and researcher. In collaboration with the healthcare team, the CNS monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and outcomes. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience in a nursing specialty, the CNS sphere of influence includes the care of the patient/family, practice of nursing and providing solutions for complex systems and processes. The CNS serves as a role model, patient advocate, charge agent, and leader to enhance patient care. This position practices within the scope of the California Nursing Practice Act and in accordance with Valley Children's policies.

Valley Children’s main Hospital campus in Madera provides Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) support - the highest level of care available for neonates and infants. Valley Children’s supports a network of NICUs throughout Central California, providing the opportunity for families with critically ill babies to receive treatment closer to home throughout his or her entire stay.


  • Master's Degree in Nursing with expertise in clinical nursing specialty
  • Valid CA RN license
  • Active Clinical Nurse Specialist License
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse (NCC) OR Critical Care Registered Nurse-Neonatal (CCRN) required
  • HeartCode BLS required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is required within six (6) months of hire or transfer into position
  • Minimum three (3) years clinical area with at least one (1) year NICU equivalent to a Regional or Community NICU required
  • Minimum five (5) years increasingly responsible experience which demonstrates proficiency in the skills and knowledge required to perform the job

POSITION DETAILS: Full time, exempt level position, 80 hours per pay period
