JOB SUMMARY: This position is accountable for managing the overall operations of a defined patient care unit during an assigned shift. The incumbent is accountable for monitoring, evaluation, and directing patient care provided by staff, coordinating activities of the patient care unit, making staff assignments and assisting with the development and evaluation of staff members. The incumbent will assist with the recruitment and hiring of staff, evaluating staff competency and evaluating, coaching, and counseling assigned staff in concert with the Manager/Supervisor. This position practices within the scope of the Nursing Practice Act, and in accordance with Children's policies.
StarshipExplorer is a 36-bed, acute care unit with a patient population comprisedprimarily of surgical patients. The unit additionally has the ability to take16 monitored beds for more critical patients. The unit received transfers fromthe Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and/or Post Anesthesia Care Unit when apatient’s condition is a surgical one. This includes cardiac surgery, trauma,neurosurgery, and orthopedic patients. The premature infant whose condition isstable enough to leave the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit may also be a patienton Explorer. Explorer is also occasionally an overflow area for the acutemedical unit.
The agerange on Explorer is newborn to eighteen years with an average length of stayof four days. The normal nurse patient ration is 1:3-4 depending on patientacuity and staff mix. "Team" patientcare is the modality as well as an interdisciplinary approach on Explorer.Caregivers include Registered Nurses and Patient Care technicians. Other interdisciplinary staff involved withpatient care includes Surgeons, Physicians, Nurse Practitioners/PhysicianAssistants, Case Managers, Social Workers, Interpreters, Dietitians and otherAncillary Staff. A Unit Aide is available on the day shift to stock rooms,assist in maintaining equipment and other supplied needed for patientcare. A Health Unit Coordinator providestwenty-four hour clerical support.
REQUIREMENTS: This position requires: A) a Bachelor'sDegree. BSN strongly preferred; B) an active California Registered Nurselicensure (RN); C) Life Support Certifications (see specifics below); and D) aminimum of 2 years full time or equivalent nursing experience. Pediatricexperience preferred. Bilingual skills desirable.
Life Support Certifications Required:1) HeartCode Basic LifeSupport (BLS) within 30 days; 2) Focused Pediatric Resuscitation (FPR) within12 months.
