The pediatric inpatient post-surgical unit, also known as Explorer, is a dynamic and fast-paced, 35-bed unit, specializing in post-surgical care for patients across various specialties including orthopedics, general surgery, cardiac, and neurology. With centralized monitoring, our dedicated staff ensures high-quality care for every patient, offering an excellent opportunity for nurses to acquire diverse skills due to the rapid turnover and patient variety. The unit also plays a crucial role in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), with 12 beds – 6 for seizure monitoring and 6 for surgical overflow cases. Our EMU rooms are equipped with specialty equipment to monitor and visualize seizure activity, leading to improved treatment and better patient outcomes.

Job Summary:
The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an advanced practice nurse who functions in the role of expert clinician, educator, leader, consultant and researcher. In collaboration with the healthcare team, the CNS monitors the clinical care of patients and provides clinical support to improve patient care and outcomes. With in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience in a nursing specialty, the CNS sphere of influence includes the care of the patient/family, practice of nursing and providing solutions for complex systems and processes. The CNS serves as a role model, patient advocate, charge agent, and leader to enhance patient care.This position practices within the scope of the California Nursing Practices Act and in accordance with Valley Children's policies.
Qualifications
Education
- Masters Degree Nursing with expertise in clinical nursing specialty (required)
Licenses and Certifications
- RN - Registered Nurse License - CA-BRN - California Board of Registered Nursing (required)
- CNS - Clinical Nurse Specialist - CA-BRN - California Board of Registered Nursing (required)
- BLS - Basic Life Support - AHA - American Heart Association within 30 days of hire or transfer into position (required)
- Other - Other National Certification (preferred)
Work Experience
- Minimum three (3) years Experience in clinical area (required)
- Minimum five (5) years Experience in area of specialty (preferred)
Skills and Abilities
- Extensive advanced knowledge of nursing principles, practices and systems.
