Job Description

Under general supervision, the Financial Counselor position requires fundamental knowledge of Valley Children's Hospitals' Financial Management policy as well as understand regulatory compliance and insurance plan requirements. This position is accountable for assisting uninsured and underinsured families with the navigation of the process related to applying various government-sponsored healthcare resources, including Charity program. It also involve in assisting families with payment plans or other options related to resolving patient account balances within the guidelines of VCH financial management policy. A Financial Counselor is responsible for securing pre-authorizations for scheduled services and authorizations for emergency/urgent services. Should be well-versed in insurance terminology to ensure efficient and timely billing and reimbursement. Responsible to have a direct contact with Physician offices and staff, Insurance Plans, Central Scheduling, Patient Access Registration, Case Management, HIM and the Business Office. Responsible working in a small team, sharing an equal amount of the work load. All tasks must be performed with close adherence to both hospital and regulatory compliance. Perform other special duties in order to assist the health care personnel in their functions provided that the task is covered by their level of competency.

The Admissions department is often the first point of contact for patients and their families, and the Admissions Counselors play a critical role in ensuring patients receive the care they need. Registering children and coordinating with family members takes a special person with skills to engage a worried parent and a child in distress. The Admissions department is responsible for registering patients and ensuring they are admitted to the hospital quickly and efficiently. The department is responsible for collecting patient information, verifying insurance coverage, and obtaining necessary authorizations for treatment. Admissions Counselors also provide patients with information about their hospital stay, including what to expect during their stay, what to bring with them, and what to do if they have any questions or concerns. In addition, Admissions Counselors ensure patient consents and other important documents are signed or provided to patients and family. Financial Counselors are also available to assist patients with arranging or verifying insurance coverage and to arrange payment plans or charity care.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum three (3) years or related experience as a health care financial counseling and/or billing and collection at any hospital environment required
  • Minimum two (2) years general clerical experience, in a healthcare environment or professional office involving public contact, is preferred
  • Basic computer knowledge with word processing and spreadsheet programs, such as Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, medical insurances (Medi-Cal, Medicare, CCS, HMO's, PPO's, Commercial), regulatory compliance and insurance company requirements, and ICD-10 / CPT coding
  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to details, and maintain a positive attitude. Able to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize duties/tasks
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills for building relationships with patient, patient's families, and with colleagues at all levels
  • Bilingual skills preferred

EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma as accredited by the US Department of Education or GED required
