Manager Instructional Designer - Clinical Informatics

Reporting to the Executive Director of EMR and Clinical Services (CNIO), the Manager of Instructional Designers is accountable for the creation and management of a training program using a variety of educational media to design and develop state-of-the-art training programs for designated audiences. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, including nursing, clinicians, providers, and other stakeholders across the organizational continuum, identify and develop training solutions improving patient/family-centered service and care delivery to support end-users' knowledge of the Epic Electronic Medical Record (EMR).  As an experienced educational training professional who knows how to apply adult learning behavior theory and how to put it into practice with an in-depth understanding of the professional field, this role will lead a team in designing, developing, and conducting health information systems onboarding and on-going training for clinical and non-clinical end-users in alignment with the organizational strategic plan, regulatory requirements, and clinical outcomes.  The Manager is responsible for determining staffing resource allocation and associated staff development and performance management for the training team members to determine Epic training needs and goals.

Additionally, the Manager oversees the development and delivery of advanced lesson plans and curriculum utilizing knowledge of specified training needs, decides curriculum delivery and effectiveness of methods, oversees the creation and maintenance of a training environment, creates a course catalog and training schedule, and ensures all users are trained before they access the production environment. Provides guidance to the Instructional Designers to implement changes based on advanced workflow issues gathered during training and design sessions.  This position also provides advanced support and troubleshooting to end users and the Epic Service Desk Teams.  The Manager mentors and provides guidance and training to other team members.

Clinical Informatics oversees training and workflow development for the Epic electronic health record. This includes providing training and support for new employees as well as ongoing support for all Epic users. Instructional Designers are experienced educational training professionals who know how to apply adult learning behavior theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field. They work with subject matter experts to learn workflows and apply instructional design methodology to the development of training materials for Epic system upgrades and optimizations. Clinical Informaticists apply their clinical training and experience to evaluate and improve workflows for clinical users of Epic. This includes proposing and overseeing system optimizations, collaborating with system analysts, and working with Instructional Designers on the development of training materials as needed. Clinical Informaticists round with users to observe workflows and provide at-the-elbow support as needed.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two (2) years progressively responsible management/leadership experience, preferably in a healthcare setting required AND minimum one (1) year Epic experience
  • Experience managing a training team or experience as a trainer preferred.
  • Demonstration of effective communication, organization, and leadership skills through past performance.
  • Experience with project management, adult education, and curriculum delivery.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use IT systems, training software, i.e., Articulate, creation of new training methodologies, i.e., training videos, and presentation software to create teaching and learning materials and documentation.
  • Capacity to manage multiple competing objectives and to clearly communicate results.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff who have a wide range of seniority and knowledge/skill sets.

EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • College Degree - 4 year in Instructional Design or related healthcare degree
  • Master’s Degree in Instructional Design or related healthcare degree preferred.
  • EPIC - Epic Certification within 90 days of hire or transfer into position
