About Us:
The High Risk Infant Follow-up Program assesses the development of children under the age of 3. HRIF is a CCS (California Children’s Services) program aimed at assessing infants who are at a high risk for developmental delays. All babies who have either had a NICU stay or PICU stay and were born before the age of 32 weeks gestation or weighed less than 1500 grams at birth are followed in HRIF, as well as term babies with medical conditions such as congenital heart disease. During an HRIF visit the child receives a physical exam, a neurological assessment, a developmental assessment, and a family psychosocial assessment by a Social Worker. When a child is found to have developmental delays, referrals are made to other subspecialist such as Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy and Audiology. In addition, many referrals are made to the patient’s local Regional Centers for Early Intervention evaluations. During an HRIF visit parents are taught about developmental milestones and given information on how to monitor their child’s development. A child is typically seen at 6 months of age, at 1 year of age, and the last visit is at 2 years.
