Registered Nurse Navigator - Plastic Surgery/Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery

SUMMARY: Valley Children’s is seeking a Registered Nurse to serve as a Nurse Navigator on the Pediatric Hand and Upper Extremity Plastic Surgery Team. The RN assists the assigned staff attending in all aspects of comprehensive patient care. This position includes practice in the clinical setting, including clinic, inpatient, ambulatory/outpatient, and pre-operative and post-operative care. The practice will involve care and management of patients requiring or in need of consultation for a plastic surgery or hand and upper extremity related diagnoses. Care will focus on coordination of care for patients however will also include performing clinic assessments, daily plan of care, reductions/casting, and assistance with minor hand clinic procedures.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • See patients independently and perform assessments as well as work with surgeon and nurse practitioner to assist with coordination of care
  • Assist with triage of new, complex referrals
  • Assist with minor hand clinic procedures, perform wound care, splinting/castings and dispense medications
  • Provide care to ambulatory/patients when needed in coordination with other ambulatory nursing staff
  • Assist with rooming and ushering patients as needed and coordinating flow of the clinic
  • Coordinate referrals, follow up on consults and scheduling/rescheduling of patients
  • Order and coordinate basic medical imaging, complex medical imaging and nerve conduction exams
  • Work with social worker and psychologist as needed
  • Obtain and review outside medical records and prepare charts for clinics
  • Review patient lists and follow up on aspects of patients’ care, interfacing with several clinical departments (Genetics,
  • Radiology, Rheumatology, Neurology, Orthopedics, Hand Therapy, Rehabilitation, etc.) and communicating directly with families
  • Coordination of preoperative and postoperative care
  • Coordinate care with Medical Treatment Units of the Central Valley
  • Medication reconciliation
  • Coordinate with Occupational Therapy team regarding teaching and therapy plans
  • Attend weekly hand surgery educational conferences
  • Option to perform research, including coordinating appointments, work with research coordinator
  • Ability to work independently to advance patient’s coordinated and comprehensive care

Experience and Education


  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a clinical nursing specialty preferred, additional years highly desirable
  • Experience in pediatrics, plastic surgery and/or clinic setting a plus
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Hand Surgery specific training will be provided
  • Extensive advanced knowledge of nursing principles, clinical practice and healthcare systems required
  • Ability to work independently, attention to detail, problem-solve, and assume responsibility for inpatient/outpatient care
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral/written communication skills for effective interactions with patients and their family members, and colleagues in multiple medical and surgery disciplines
  • Bilingual skills preferred


  • Associates degree in nursing required, bachelor’s in nursing highly desirable
  • Active California Registered Nurse licensure (RN)

Position Details: Full time, exempt level position, clinic closed on weekends and holidays

Pay Range: $53.00 - $78.00

Location: Madera, CA
