RN - Behavioral Health/Developmental Specialty

JOB SUMMARY: This position is in our Charlie Mitchel Clinic. The Charlie Mitchell Children’s Center is a Rural Health Center offering family-focused primary care to children up to age 21 with acute and chronic medical conditions as well as developmental-behavioral pediatrics and services for transition age youth. Medical care is provided in a manner that is compassionate, accessible, effective, efficient, and culturally conscious. The clinic is located on the Valley Children’s main campus in Madera.

This position is accountable for providing competent nursing care for patients with common health problems, and is expected to deliver competent patient care to a full patient assignment. This position practices under the direction of the designated nurse executive, within the scope of the Nursing Practice Act, and in accordance with Children's polices. This position will work in the Development and Behavioral Specialty.

Developmental-behavioral pediatrics (DBP) is a subspecialty of general pediatrics that focuses on assessment and management of developmental and behavioral problems, including autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, learning disabilities, intellectual disability, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems. Developmental-behavioral pediatricians work closely with school districts, county mental health services, and regional centers to advocate for patients and their families.


  • Triage and respond to patient calls regarding mental health concerns as well as triage of new Developmental/Behavioral Health patients
  • Serve as liaison with County Behavioral Health, school districts, and Regional Centers
  • Schedule telehealth follow-up and urgent appointments
  • Make follow-up calls for interim medication checks
  • Obtain prior authorizations for genetic testing and/or GeneSight testing and TARs for medications
  • Obtain records of IEP, IFSP, and prior psychological/developmental evaluations
  • Disseminate and obtain intake paperwork and questionnaires before first appointment
  • Participate in meetings with CVRC and County BHS to ensure appropriate referral processes and services for dual-diagnosis (autism/ID and mental health condition) pediatric patients
  • Send out testing reports to families after assessment
  • Collect releases for Regional Center, schools, and prior psychiatrists
  • Making copies of handouts, questionnaires, and coloring pages
  • Faxing records to CVRC, schools, County BHS, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Active California RN License
  • Graduate from an accredited RN program, Bachelor's degree preferred (BSN desirable)
  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required
  • Experience in developmental/behavioral health highly desirable
  • Experience in obtaining prior authorizations preferred
  • Pediatric experience is preferred
  • Bilingual skills preferred
  • HeartCode BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

POSITION DETAILS: Full time, 80 hours per pay period, Day shift, Clinic hours are Mon-Fri and closed on weekends and holidays.
