The Valley’s multicultural population represents more than 90 ethnic groups, providing a rich and flavorful dining experience. Local restaurateurs offer diverse cuisine including Basque, Ethiopian, Indian, Mediterranean, Thai and more. Asian and Mexican restaurants are almost as popular as pizza parlors, and fine dining chains compete with local favorites. For casual dining, barbeque joints that feature the region’s famous tri-tip sandwich always draw a crowd.
If you prefer practicing the culinary arts at home, the area offers fresh fish markets that receive regular shipments of fish and seafood from the Central Coast. Local meat markets feature beef from area ranchers. The San Joaquin Valley is a produce-lover’s paradise. Don’t be surprised to find fresh fruits and vegetables from nearby farms sold on street corners, as well as honey made from the bees that pollinate the fruit trees. Dried fruit, nuts and wine produced locally are sold in grocery stores, roadside markets and even by delivery.

Fresno and other Valley communities offer an abundance of entertainment opportunities, including several art museums, historic theaters, a renowned philharmonic orchestra, and an active academic and literary community.
Sports fans can partake in an assortment of athletics at Fresno State. Win or lose, fans and alumni of Fresno State, also known as the Red Wave, are some of the most diehard in the country, which always makes taking in any Bulldog game exciting and fun. However, college isn’t the only game in town; Fresno is home of the Colorado Rockies, Low-A affiliate, the Fresno Grizzlies. And the Fresno Fuego soccer team has been a major player in the USL Premier Development League for more than a decade.
Outdoor Recreation
Mild winters and warm summers provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. The League of American Bicyclists awarded the Bronze Medal Designation to the City of Fresno as a Bicycle Friendly Community. Nearby lakes provide boating recreation for sailors, jet skiers and wakeboarding enthusiasts. For recreation at a slower pace, play a round at one of the local golf courses. You can also pack up your foursome for an excursion to one of the state’s famed courses close by, like the U.S. Olympic Club in San Francisco or Pebble Beach’s beautiful Cypress Point (the 14th best course in the world) located less than three hours from Fresno. If you’re a winter sports fan, take advantage of the multiple ski runs throughout the nearby Sierras, or try a spin around the rink at Valley Children’s Ice Center in Bakersfield.
